âUfâ¦â
Moriko collapsed back onto her bed, staring up the ceiling. She had already discarded her garments and had taken a bath. Now, she wore a thin undergarment, and her hair was very rich in smell. It burned into her senses and it drowned out anything she might have smelt during the prior days.
Moriko turned onto her side and rubbed at her cheeks before grabbing the Celestial Blade of Incrimination. The jewel in its hilt was dormant, but Moriko began to speak to it as if it were a living person beside her.
âHave you not spoken to me because Iâve angered you? Was it because of what I did? I regret ever going to that Sect⦠I regret killing that person⦠But I canât change the past. Regret wonât bring anyone back from the dead, just as sympathy wonât. Iâm sorry if my actions angered you.â
âI have a feeling that I know why you wonât talk to me. You werenât looking for an apology⦠I donât know if thereâs another name I should call you by, but here it goes. â Moriko brought the Celestial Blade Of Incrimination to her chest and squeezed it between her breasts. â Thank you, Celestial Blade of Incrimination.â
The slightest flicker of heat flared in her palm and Moriko looked to it.
For what?
âThat night, Daikiâ¦â Her lip twisted. âThat man wasnât the only one to protect me. You had also protected me from the attack. Thank you for that, and thank you for everything else. I have a feeling that you might have done more than even I saw.â
How could I not? A stupid little girl like you would have already been dead if it werenât for me.
Moriko raised her hand and curled her fingers into a fist, and her face pulled into an expression of disgust. âOn the other hand, maybe I should have just left you for dead.â
Moriko snickered and placed the Celestial Blade of Incrimination beneath her pillow. She relaxed down into her bed, and her body felt like lead. Her lids slowly fluttered closed, as if they were forcefully pulled down. The heaviness that Moriko had felt in her body seemed to increase tenfold before she was pulled beneath a smothering darkness.
Thank you⦠I promise Iâll forget about you now, but I just had to say it one more time. If it werenât for you sparing my life, then I would have never returned to my family. I would have never done what Atomu and Hideki wanted. I would have died as a selfish bastard and coward.
Thank you, Daiki.
